2009-2010 Highlights--
July:
- Family Literacy of Racine was the recipient of United Methodist Christ Church's Change for Change program
this months. Thanks to everyone who donated their change to FLR!
August:
- Family Literacy of Racine was the recipient of Olympia Brown's Offertory "grant" program this month. FLR's
Executive Director, Richard Marciniak, visited Olympia Brown August 2nd to introduce RFL to Olympia
Brown's church members.
- Third annual book publishing/school supply party was August 13, from 5:30-7:30pm. Ninety-two individ-
uals from 33 families contributed to In Our New Language, 3rd edition. Cover art (below) was done by kinder-
gartener, Erandy Cesario, after reading Ten Apples Up on Top
in celebration of Dr. Seuss's birthday. Our 1st edition was
75 pages; this year's is 113. A highlight this year is children's
answers to "When I Grow Up..." In Alisha Janicek and Lizbeth
Ruvalcaba’s K4/K5 class, we have 3 policemen, a fireman, a fire
woman, 2 teachers, a car driver, an artist, a doctor, a nurse, a
lawyer, a wrestler, and a skateboarder. And the best answer?

- 8th annual school supply giveaway for returning families
August 13, 5:30-7:00 pm. Forty-one kids from 23 returning
families received school supplies. Thanks to Delta Kappa
Gamma for providing financial support for the school
supplies.
September:
- First Day of family literacy classes--September 10. RFL and Gateway Technical College will be collaborating
this year on providing a GED class for ESL students.
- Mary Finley of Girl Scouts visited September 28th to talk to girls and mothers about starting a troop/group at
RFL.
- Girls Circle Programming to start for girls 9-14 years of age. See Services for more information.
October:
- Racine Health Department visits for tooth varnishing/dental screenings
- Walking field trip to High Street Fire Station--Fire Safety Week
- Day of the Dead party--October 29th
November:
- Pick N Save walking field trip--November 9th
- Mad Scientist--crime scene investigation for middle schoolers--November 19th
