2010 Special Project--
2nd Annual St Monica's Cinco de Mayo Fiesta
Family Literacy of Racine engages in special projects, both to provide learning experiences for its families and to contribute to
making the City of Racine a better place to live. This youth project for 2010 was a Cinco de Mayo Fiesta for St. Monica's
seniors. The Fiesta was funded by a United Way Youth as Resources (YAR) grant.
FLR's 5th-8th graders worked on this project from
January through May 11, the night of the Fiesta.
3rd and 4th graders helped decorate, helped serve, and
socialized with seniors the night of the fiesta.
Younger children also attended and helped work with seniors
on making "boleros." SEE PICTURES BELOW.
The night began with authentic Mexican dancing per-
formed by the Oaxacan group Tierra Del Sol.
Here's a short list of what the preteens did:
- Conceived the idea
- Wrote answers for grant questions
- Did a presentation for the YAR board
- Shopped for decorations
- Decorated St. Monica's lunchroom
- Planned a menu
- Planned a craft item
- Signed up parents to cater the dinner
- Created a program
- Emceed the night
- Worked on the buffet line preparing individual plates--all seniors served at tables
- Waited tables
- Joined Seniors for dinner, with 1 or 2 youth sitting at most tables--
for both cross-generational and cross-cultural conversation
