School Age
Education
School Age Education at Racine Family Literacy provides
an afterschool program for 1st through 9th graders Because
all come from low literacy/low income families, the over
arching goal for these children is to bridge the "achievement
enrichment activities, and skill building (literacy and other
"assets").
Newest part of the program is "asset building." This year
middle schooler got a say in what books they would read
and will be involved in other planning. The intent is to build
both involvement and self confidence. Each semester RFL
will also try to do a small community service project with
these youth. Awareness of others is a key trait for success-
ful teens.
RFL has three school age classes:
- 1st & 2nd grade
- 3rd &4th grade
- 5th-9th grade
In addition, a reading specialist works with small groups/individuals nightly.
Major funding is provided through RUSD's Title 1 Program and United Way's "Caring for Kids"
Priority Area. New "Achievement Now" programming funded by United Way in 2008 has three
goals: 1) increase skills in core subject areas, especially reading; 2) build “assets” connected to
success in school—positive attitude about learning, reading for pleasure, daily homework time; 3)
build social “assets”—learning about the world and expressing “care”—through extended field trips
and service projects.
To measure success RFL now tracks attendance, grades, and reading levels for all children
from 3rd-9th grade.

Racine Junior League also
Because of a generous grant from the Racine
Junior League , families--and especially
school age children--will be taking more field
trips in 2008-2009. This supports the goals
of RFL and especially the new "Achievement
Now grant (see above). Special emphasis
will be placed on providing school-age
children with field trips that teach about
careers and provide other opportunities to
learn more about the world around them.
